Every student craves one thing in particular. That is simply put affordable but decent alcohol. Now, cheap wine is not that hard to get. Good cheap wines and other enhanced (grape) juices are difficult to spot. Here in Canada, alcoholic beverages are ridiculously expensive. Therefore, and this is the first post, we set up a guide for the best and most affordable wine you can get. Enjoy reading our blog and we want your feedback and ideas for new wines!
Early in September we purchased a Proprietor's Reserve Pinot Grigio for about $9. Well... the first sip resulted in our faces trying to avoid the taste by making weird grimaces. It is a dry wine and by all means not the worst wine we have encountered. This wine is not worth $7 of the $9 we paid so it is now on our black list. I must admit - I did use some of it for Squash soup though. And that turned out to be a great idea.
Use this Pinot Grigio wisely - make squash soup!
Get a glass of the above wine, should you mistakedly buy it, and boil with a pealed, cut and sliced butternut squash in more or less half a litre of vegetable broth (this depends on the size of your squash - mine was rather small). Add a slice of black forest ham and let simmer for at least 30 minutes until you can mash the squash with a fork. Mix it with a hand mixer and add a hand full of fresh cilantro, 150ml of Cream, 1 teaspoon butter, and some salt and pepper. Yummy.
